Canada Winter Games seeking torchbearers

The deadline is fast approaching for prospective torchbearers for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

The deadline is fast approaching for prospective torchbearers for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Friday is the last day to submit nominations for people to hold the flame that will be carried into CN Centre to officially begin the Games at the opening ceremony Feb. 13.

A total of 150 torchbearers will be selected. Online nomination forms are available at canadagames2015.ca.

The first torch will be lit on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Oct. 15 and will then be flown to Victoria two days later. The torch will pass through previous Canada Games host cities - Burnaby/New Westminster and Kamloops - on its way to Prince George. On Nov. 4, 100 days before the Games begin, the flame will arrive at the redesigned Canada Games Plaza adjacent to the Civic Centre. That will mark the beginning of the Illuminate the North torch relay across thousands of kilometres of northern B.C. highways, leading back to Prince George on Feb. 13.

The 2015 Games will be the largest sporting event ever held in Prince George and northern B.C., with 3,000 athletes from all 10 provinces and three territories competing in 19 sports over a two-week period.
