No matter what they tried, the Mackenzie LumberJax couldn't chop the legs out from under Damon Calfa.
Calfa, who plays for the BX Pub Bandits, amassed 18 points in two Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association games against the host LumberJax on the weekend. Calfa fired seven goals and added one assist in an 11-10 Bandits decision on Saturday night. On Sunday, he was at it again, piling up four goals and six helpers in a 17-7 victory.
With the wins, the Bandits tightened their grip on first place in the six-team league. They moved to 10-1 this season and their 20 points are four more than the second-place College Heights Pub Assault (8-2) and the third-place Twisted Cork/Regional Security Stylers (8-4).
Drew Doig was also a key man for the Bandits on Saturday. He finished with two goals and three assists, while his dad, Brett Doig, chipped in with one goal and two assists. Scott Morash rounded out the scoring for BX Pub.
Chad Gratton led the LumberJax with three goals and two helpers. Mackenzie also got two goals from Trent Poulin and singles from Ken Barwise, Alex Roberts and Mike Mark Foreman.
In the nets, Jamie Bellamy and Jamie Thorne of the Bandits combined to stop 42 shots. James Teer made 38 saves for the LumberJax.
After Saturday's back-and-forth contest, Sunday's was much more one-sided. In that one, Tyler Halliday notched six goals and five assists in support of Calfa. Brett Doig had five goals and three helpers, while Drew Doig and Ryan Waddington also contributed goals. The Bandits, who typically run into penalty problems, didn't spend a single minute in the sin bin in the game.
Gratton again paced the Mackenzie offence, this time with two goals and two helpers. Poulin, Kyle Pacheco, Barwise, Roberts and Luke Perron all finished with single goals.
Bellamy, the winning goaltender, made 34 stops. Casey Nichols, who struggled in the Mackenzie nets, finished with 42 saves.
The fifth-place LumberJax saw their record slip to 2-6.
The PGSLA season continues tonight (8 p.m., Coliseum) when the Assault clash with the fourth-place Shooters Pub Devils (3-7).
The Quesnel Crossfire, a new team in the league this season, sit in sixth place with a 1-9 record. They picked up their first victory last Thursday when they shaded the Stylers 9-8.
