Biathletes on target at national championship

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club was well-represented at the Biathlon National Championship in Valcartier, Que., from March 15 to 18 by five current or former members.

Sarah Beaudry, 17, returns to Prince George with a gold and two silver medals in the youth women's category, winning gold Saturday in the six-kilometre sprint while hitting 9-of-10 targets and picking up silvers Thursday in the 10 km individual event and Sunday in the 7.5 km pursuit hitting 15-of-20 targets in each event.

In the youth men's category Arthur Roots, 18, improved his placement each day, finishing eighth in Thursday's 12.5 km individual event (12 targets), seventh in Saturday's 7.5 km sprint (eight) and fifth Sunday in the 10 km pursuit (15 targets).

Leah Forsdick, 16, was 13th in the senior girls 7.5 km individual event (16 targets), 23rd in the six kilometre sprint (five targets), and 20th in the 7.5 km pursuit (15 targets).

Former CNSC members, Matthew and Aaron Neumann, who train in Canmore, Alta., also competed in the men's and junior men's categories, respectively. Matt, 22, was eighth in the 15 km mass start Thursday (11 targets), ninth in the 10 km sprint (five targets) Saturday, and eighth Sunday in the 12.5 km pursuit (13 targets). Aaron, 20, was seventh in Thursday's 12.5 km mass start (13 targets), fourth Saturday in the 10 km sprint, and fifth Sunday in the 12.5 km pursuit (15 targets).

A sixth regional athlete, Emily Dickson, 14, of the Omineca Ski Club in Burns Lake, was also at the nationals and won a silver medal Thursday in the senior girls 7.5 km individual (16 targets) and was 11th in Saturday's six-kilometre sprint (five targets) and sixth Sunday in the 7.5 km pursuit (15 targets).

The Neumann men competed at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax along with Beaudry and Roots. The latter two athletes, along with Forsdick and Dickson, have a strong chance at competing in the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.
