B.C. Hockey League adopts 10-minute overtime format

Prince George Spruce Kings and its fellow teams will adopt new format next season

To try to reduce the number of shootouts in regular season games, the B.C. Hockey League is changing its overtime tiebreaker format.

Starting next season, the Prince George Spruce Kings and its fellow teams will play 10 minutes of 3-on-3 overtime and if nobody scores games will then be decided in a shootout.

That replaces the five-minute OT/shootout format the BCHL adopted in 2018. Under the five-minute format, 41.5 per cent of games went to shootouts.
