Six of Prince George's top young baseball players are a step closer to swinging their bats in a World Series tournament that will welcome teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Cole Schwing, Cole Beacom, Scott Walters, Michael Taylor, Mikey Schwab and Zach Swanson -- members of the Lomak peewee Knights -- impressed evaluators at a Team B.C. regional tryout camp in Kamloops on Sunday. The tryout was part of the first stage of choosing a club that will compete in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 12U World Series, July 23-28 in Sylvania, Ohio.
Close to 200 players showcased their talents at the camp.
Earlier in May, regional tryouts were also held in Nanaimo and Aldergrove.
Eventually, 16 players will be chosen for the Team B.C. roster.
Players from around the province will now be scouted during tournament play as the season progresses. Schwing and company will be watched closely when the Knights run the bases at the John Main Classic, May 25-27 in North Delta.
In age groups ranging from eight-and-under to 18-and-under, nearly 500 teams competed in CABA World Series and national championship tournaments in 2011.
Numerous Major League Baseball stars -- including three-time American League MVP Alex Rodriguez -- have appeared in the CABA World Series.
