As a six-foot-five post player, Gabe Aubertin takes up a lot of space under the hoop.
He may fill a roster spot, too.
Aubertin, a 25-year-old from Spokane, was in town last weekend when the UNBC Northern Timberwolves men's basketball team battled the Vancouver Island University Mariners in a two-game set at the Northern Sport Centre. Aubertin was brought here by UNBC head coach Todd Jordan. If the future plays out as Aubertin hopes, he'll be back next fall, in a uniform instead of street clothes.
"If coach (Jordan) wants me up here, then I'll be up here," Aubertin said. "I like the atmosphere. It seems like a great basketball town -- very supportive. The facility is very nice and the team is very supportive and welcoming. I'm the new guy here, just up here checking it out, and they were all very nice. They're a good bunch of guys."
The Timberwolves (5-1) will be on the NSC hardwood Saturday night against the UBC Okanagan Heat (3-3). Tip-off is at 8. The UNBC and UBC-O women will get the night started at 6. The female T-wolves sit at 3-3, while the Heat has a 4-2 record.
After splitting last weekend's games with the Mariners, the UNBC men slipped from No. 2 to No. 5 in the national rankings. VIU held steady at No. 4.
