TRU finally beats U of A in men's volleyball

It was a win six years in the making. And hometown heroes Spencer Reed and Colin Carson were major contributors in the long-awaited outcome.

In a men's volleyball exhibition match Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack beat the University of Alberta Golden Bears for the first time in the history of the TRU program. The match -- which felt more like a national championship clash than a pre-season contest -- ended 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 18-16 in favour of the WolfPack.

Reed, TRU's starting libero, and Carson, the team's starting setter, are both from Prince George and both were on the NSC floor for all five sets. The highly-entertaining match unfolded in front of about 1,100 spectators.

"It's absolutely amazing," said Reed, a 2008 graduate of Prince George secondary school. "The only team we had never beaten was the University of Alberta. What better way to do it, here in front of a thousand-plus people -- I just can't describe the feeling right now. It was just two great volleyball teams going at it."
