It wasn't the ending anyone really saw coming, but the Rated PG Rollergirls dropped their second straight bout
Saturday night.
Facing off against the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers' Arch Angels, the home team saw a strong start to their March Radness event.
Jammer Cruely Sue opened the scoring, quickly putting the team on the board and keeping the Alberta visitors with no points to their name.
The Prince George women racked up nearly 20 points before the Angels found the scoreboard after calling a timeout before the first half reached the midway mark.
But before long the home team began to find themselves in penalty trouble and with skaters being sent to the box, the visitors began to close in on their lead before overtaking completely.
Arch Angels defence and the speed and footwork of jammers Jenuine Draft, BB Sting and Cherry-oto-Fire held the Roller Girls off until there were able to regain a slim three-point lead at the half.
But despite strong play throughout the second half by blockers Lockdown, Sarabellum and Sistah Viberosis and competing against their most evenly matched team of the season, Rated PG Rollergirls couldn't come back from the amount of power jams - where their own jammer was in the penalty box - afforded to the Arch Angels.
The clock ran out with the Roller Girls losing 122-111 and that was something that didn't sit well with Roller Girls coach Whitney "Uncle Daddy" Warren, who said it was pretty clear his girls were the better team.
"I wholeheartedly believe we were screwed by the reffing," Warren said, citing a high ratio of calls made by a referee in St. Albert colours. "It's absolutely atrocious."
Despite the game being generally friendly, Warren said he was upset by the hard work the Roller Girls put in going to waste.
"I know for a fact we were the better team and they didn't get a chance to show it," he said.
Regardless of the outcome, Warren said he was proud of the way his team played through the situation.
"That says a lot about the level of talent and class this team has," he said.
The Rated PG Rollergirls will play their final bout of the season April 21 at the Roll-A-Dome against their sister squad, the Gold Pain City Roller Derby Girls from Quesnel.
Look out for some lineup changes as they mix up their roster to while playing the fledging team.
