Don Zurowski spent nearly twice money as much to come in second behind Lyn Hall in last fall's mayoral race.

According to documents released Monday by Elections B.C. detailing local government election spending, Zurowski (who earned 8,850 votes to Hall's 10,463) spent $72,249.29 on his campaign for mayor. Hall recorded expenses of $39,788.30 for his successful bid for the chain of office.

All candidates had until Feb. 13 to file their financial disclosures as per the new Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. Prior to the new legislation, passed by the province last May, such disclosures had to be made locally, as opposed to Elections B.C.

Zurowski widely outspent his 2008 mayoral campaign expenses of $48,053 when he was defeated by Dan Rogers, but didn't hit former mayor Shari Green's record of $81,147 spent in 2011.

Both Hall and Zurowski ran contribution-heavy campaigns, with Hall reporting just $1,720 in personal contributions and Zurowski not reporting any.

The union-business divide was also clear in the two mayoral campaigns. Hall received a total of $6,500 from trade unions, while Zurowski received no union money.

Sophomore councillor Frank Everitt spent the most for a council candidate, reporting $39,668.30 in expenses, followed by re-elected incumbent Albert Koehler, who spent $31,221.77. However, while almost 90 per cent of Everitt's expenses were covered by donations, Koehler primarily covered his costs himself, receiving just $3,100 from three donors.

Debora Munoz spent the most for an unsuccessful council candidate, reporting $18,911.32 in expenses and finishing ninth in the polls. Of those elected, Garth Frizzell spent the least, reporting $6,502.57 in expenses.

Five candidates - Jeffrey Cunin, Gregg Kauk, Coralee Larsen, Don Roberts and Travis Shaw - reported they spent no money on their campaigns, while three - Alex Huber, Jason Luke and Harry Ulch - financed their campaigns entirely out of pocket.
