Yum: Noshing in the park

If you've never spent Canada Day in Prince George, the variety of food offered at Fort George Park can be surprising.

Booths of numerous ethnic food booths line up every year, going past the typical hot dogs and hamburgers.

People got to choose between Chinese, African, Columbian, Indian, Greek, Aboriginal, Muslim and Filipino cuisine.

Sampling a little bit from each booth seemed to be a popular decision.

Lines flowed past each other, and seemed endless for those who waited until mid-afternoon to finally go searching for lunch.

The Greek Community of Prince George has had a booth at the event since 1973.

"We're one of the original booths, and one of the most popular I'd say," said George Apostolou, who was working at the booth.

"The line is always huge, and we sell out of everything every year."

This year they came prepared with 1,750 souvlaki, and needed 15 cases of tomatoes and cucumbers to make Greek salad.

"The entire time the celebrations have happened, we've been here. It's our biggest day of the year," Apostolou said.

The Greek community of Prince George also hosts two large events for the two Independence Days of Greece.

Jennifer Turner just moved to P.G. this summer, and said it was the ethnic food booths that made her and her husband decide to come to Fort George Park.

"That's why we came, we're excited for the food! We love ethnic foods, and being able to try a bunch of different types is great," said Turner.

They stood in line for Indian food for almost 15 minutes.

"We didn't even put down our lawn chairs, we saw the food and went straight into a line."

Turner said she moved from the Vancouver area and was worried she wouldn't be able to find the variety of food she had grown up with.

She said she was very impressed with the not only the variety of ethnic food, but the quality of it too.
