After coming within a hair's breadth of nabbing the national spelling bee crown in 2009, a Prince George student has secured a different prize.

Prince George secondary student Fei Ge was recognized as the 2013 Youth of the Year at Monday night's city council meeting.

Ge has a lengthy achievement record, including sitting as a member of PGSS student council, playing on the school's senior band and soccer and badminton teams and volunteering with the welcome event for incoming Grade 7 students.

Mayor Shari Green, who presented Ge with a commemorative plaque, called her a "positive role model for youth of all ages."

The 15 year old has her Grade 8 piano certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music, has won more than 30 medals at the the Prince George Music Festival and competed in the BC Winter Games in badminton.

Her volunteer work also includes work with the Chinese Benevolent Association, Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society and the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

With all of her academic work, Ge still managed to skip Grade 7, was the top math student in Grade 8, top social studies student in Grade 9 and top overall academic in Grade 10.

Ge also received a $250 bursary for future education from the Prince George Citizen.
