An alert general duty officer likely prevented a violent act when he found a loaded, sawed-off .22 calibre rifle and a machete during a check of a teen late Thursday night, Prince George RCMP said.

The 16-year-old youth comes from an outlying community but is known to police.

The officer also found marijuana on the youth when he was seen near the corner of 17th Avenue and Tamarack Street at about 10 p.m. The youth also provided a false name, RCMP said.

"I'm confident that our officer prevented a violent act in our City last night," said Inspector Brad Anderson. "There is no reasonable explanation for carrying a concealed firearm and a concealed machete while out for a stroll."

The youth was held overnight and was to appear in court on Friday morning.

Police are asking Crown counsel to approve 10 charges: unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing a peace officer, possession a controlled substance, two counts of possessing a dangerous weapon and four counts of failing to comply with probation.
