Workshop to talk recreation needs

The city will be sitting down with residents today to talk about their ideal outcomes for recreation in Prince George.

The city will be sitting down with residents today to talk about their ideal outcomes for recreation in Prince George.

Two community workshop sessions will be held at the Civic Centre as part of the consultation phase of the Community Services master plan.

The idea behind the plan is to put together a 10-year strategy and "decision-making framework for the provision of park and recreation facilities, programs and services delivered" by the city, according to a staff report.

The plan will look at city-owned parks and open spaces, athletic fields, recreation infrastructure, arenas and sports courts as well as those in the public and private sector to find gaps and overlaps in service.

"The overall goal will be to create a balanced model of service delivery that responds to community needs within the framework of available resources," said the staff report.

The first roundtable session at the Civic Centre runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and the second from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Pre-registration is encouraged, but drop-ins are welcome. To register, email [email protected] or call 250-561-7640.

Feedback is also being solicited until March 21 through a variety of surveys, available in hard copy and online through the city's website, with some catering specifically to youth, seniors and stakeholders. Hard copies of the surveys are available at city hall at at various city recreation facilities.

A telephone survey of randomly selected households will also be conducted this month.

The city has also gone out and sat down with community user groups and held focus group discussion, said project manager Laurie-Ann Kosec. Over the weekend, staff were set up at the Pine Centre Mall to talk to residents about the plan as a part of the city's Active Living Market.

"The whole idea is we just need to hear from people - that's our big message," said Kosec. "We're trying to determine what the community needs are and the only way we can meet those needs is if we find out, and develop some strategies to help meet them."
