Work outside this summer with B.C. Parks

Student rangers will work in Kamloops, Prince George, among other regions

If you or someone you know love the great outdoors and camping, the provincial government wants to hear from you.

The province is currently accepting applications for its 2019 B.C. Parks student ranger program.

From May to August, 12 crews of four student rangers will work in Prince George, Fort St. John, Terrace, Bella Coola, Williams Lake, Manning Park, Cranbrook, Kamloops, Victoria (Goldstream Provincial Park), Black Creek (Miracle Beach Provincial Park), North Vancouver (Mount Seymour Provincial Park) and Sechelt (Porpoise Bay Provincial Park).

Crew leads and crew members can expect to be out in the field almost every day, “participating in various projects,” reads an online job description.

If you’re someone who enjoys no-work weekends, this may not be the job for you. Crews are expected to work Saturday and Sunday.

“Applicants should expect to camp on numerous occasions during the work time in the front and backcountry, and to perform physically challenging work," states the write-up.

Information about work schedules and projects will be given to applicants once they reach the interview stage.

Here are the qualifications:

  • Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year with the intention of returning to full-time studies in the next academic year (in or outside of Canada);
  • Between 18 and 30 years of age;
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;
  • Must attend a program training event near Cultus Lake from May 26 to 31, 2019. Details on this training will be provided at the offer of employment;
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the B.C. Public Service, which may include a criminal record check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry.
