Some further fine-tuning will be thrown into the mix when a revamped city transit service hits the roads later this year.

City council approved a memorandum of understanding with B.C. Transit last summer to add 2,500 hours of service per year to the system beginning this September.

Service on all statutory holidays except Christmas and New Years and improvements to the evening and weekend services are in store as a result.

It also prompted a further review of the system, complete with a public consultation process in October "just to refine those ideas a bit more," said city transit planner Josephine Macharia, who provided an update to city council on Monday.

"In addition to just adding service, we're making sure that the other areas of challenges for our riders, like making cross connections from one bus to another or getting to major destinations on certain days are addressed as well," Macharia said Thursday in an interview.

Examples of specific steps include better coordination of routes 1 and 11 from Spruceland to downtown.

"We noticed that there were areas where the buses were just following each other too closely to be efficient," Macharia said.

Confusion for riders was also noticed as a result of "scheduling inconsistencies" on some routes.

"Instead of the bus running every half hour, during the peak period it would run every 15 minutes and then 30 minutes and 15 minutes, which I think is a challenge for new riders especially and even for existing riders in terms of having a more predictable system," Macharia said.

Pretty much every route will get additional Sunday service and frequently-used routes - 88, 89, 15 and 16 - will get more service on Saturdays.

Macharia said she is aware of a demand for service to Blackburn, a topic raised by council members on Monday night.

"We are definitely studying it and making sure that when the resources are available, to actually provide it," she said.
