Emergency responders were called out Tuesday to search for a female who fell into fast-moving water at the Willow River bridge on Highway 16, about 40 kilometres east of Prince George.

She remains missing this morning.

An airplane and helicopter were being used to search the river from the bridge to the Fraser River. The aircraft visually checked the stretch at least twice and in some spots as many as four times, Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said. The search was called off at 7:30 p.m.

She was walking her dog when she fell into the torrent about 200 metres upstream from the Willow River Canyon where Douglass said the water is moving very fast. He indicated little hope for the female.

"The current is just so strong and there are so many back eddies in that area through the canyon that you could easily be sucked under or sucked into the middle where you're just tossed around," Douglass said.

Her name and age have not yet been released.
