The annual Ride to Conquer Cancer next month will take cyclists on a 240-kilometre journey from Vancouver to Seattle. But local residents can see their northern representation in the B.C. Cancer Foundation event this weekend.

The Wheelin' Warriors of the North are hosting a fundraising barbecue at Fort George Park on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an opportunity to grab some refreshments provided by Mr. Mikes Steakhouse, Pacific Western Brewers and Superstore. A $5 donation will get you a burger and drink.

Residents can also cheer on the team as they take an exhibition ride through the community to show off their new team jerseys after lunch.

The 33 members of Wheelin' Warriors of the North are the first northern team to participate in the two-day Ride to Conquer Cancer, led by captain Karin Piche.

Unofficially, the team is more than halfway to raising its goal of $105,600 for the B.C. Cancer Foundation, which is the fundraising partner of the B.C. Cancer Agency and subsequently the new local cancer clinic.

According to information provided by the foundation, it is estimated that more than 24,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, with breast and prostate cancers leading the way.

However, British Columbians experience the lowest rates of cancer incidence and mortality in Canada.

Piche was compelled to get involved in this year's event after the loss of her friend Nola to skin cancer last year. As a stroke of coincidence, the June 15-16 ride dates also align with what would have been her late friend's 49th birthday.

"The whole thing has been a journey for me," said Piche. "Nola is channeling through me, guiding me, every step of the way."
