Wheelchair work pending for Cottonwood Island bridge

People bound to wheelchairs will have to wait until the ground has thawed before work can begin on making the new bridge at Cottonwood Island Park accessible.

People bound to wheelchairs will have to wait until the ground has thawed before work can begin on making the new bridge at Cottonwood Island Park accessible.

The bridge was constructed and put in place this winter but only temporary ramps are in place.

"Once the frost is out of the ground the City will finish the ramps and they will be wheelchair accessible," said city spokesperson Mike Davis in an e-mail. "Currently the other bridge located at the canoe launch is wheelchair accessible."

Sandy Lucas, president of the North Central Seniors Association said she can wait.

"I don't go up there until the summertime, when the ground is hard," she said.

She raised the concern after noticing a photo of the bridge in The Citizen.

"I couldn't get on it, same with a lady if she had a baby carriage, same with seniors if they were a little rickety," Lucas said. "There is no handle, no railings to hold onto as you walked up the stairs."
