West Fraser says it has completed the purchase of timber cutting rights from Weyerhaeuser following a lengthy regulatory review.

West Fraser, a B.C.-based company, has extensive operations in northern B.C., including in Chetwynd, Houston, Fraser Lake and Quesnel.

The timber rights come from a tree farm licence and long-term forest licence that total 682,000 cubic metres of logging rights each year. The timber rights -- about 15,000 logging truck loads a year -- include a temporary uplift in cutting rights of 200,000 cubic metres.

The timber tenures are located in the Kamloops area.

The company says the timber rights will increase its long-term timber supply, and is also expected to help offset anticipated declines in future timber supply in the wake of the mountain pine beetle epidemic.

The purchase is expected to benefit West Fraser's operations in 100 Mile House, Chasm and Williams Lake.
