A new website aimed at encouraging residents to support local businesses is now online.

Support PG, found at www.supportpg.ca, builds on the initiative the Prince George Chamber of Commerce started at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Its central features are a directory of businesses open for take-out and delivery, and the good news page stories about local heroes and blogs written by local experts are posted.

A marketing campaign that will be rolled out in two phases - one to support businesses while physical distancing measures are in place and a second to support them once measures have been relaxed.

"When businesses are struggling financially, one of the first cuts in spending is in marketing which is the key activity that can effectively bring in new customers," said City of Prince George economic developer manager Melissa Barcellos.

"We feel that this campaign is a way to support businesses through these reduced expenditures while also driving traffic to those businesses that are open."

Efforts to promote the website include a combination of local media outreach, digital advertising, and advertising on billboards and at bus shelters. And once the restrictiions are lifted, contests will be launched, with gift cards as prizes, to help draw customers to local businesses.
