Prince George RCMP and their partners hit the water over the weekend, targeting Ness Lake.
The police and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service conducted an enforcement campaign on June 29 to ensure boats met federal and provincial standards.
The operation, conducted by one RCMP member and two conservation officers in a patrol boat, resulted in 10 violation tickets issued.
These included eight federal violations for failing to display vessel registration numbers, failing to register vessels, and operating without a licence and two provincial tickets for fishing without a licence. Four warning violations were also handed out.
Both the RCMP, conservation service and other partner agencies are reminding the public of a few steps to safer boating:
Wear your life jacket - legally you must carry one on board, appropriately sized, for each passenger.
Don't drink and boat - boating under the influence is not only illegal, but also irresponsible and dangerous.
Take a boating course - the law requires anyone driving a motorized boat to have a pleasure-craft operator card.
Be prepared and ensure boat has all the required safety gear and sufficient fuel.
Be aware of cold water risks and watch for signs of hypothermia, beginning with shivering.
