A tracking dog helped Prince George RCMP apprehend a man wanted fafter he tried to evade police in the West Lake area.
Since his conditional sentence order was revoked late last month, RCMP had been on the lookout for Erwin Gerhard Engel, 73, when he was seen driving Tuesday on Minchin Road, off Blackwater Road southwest of the city.
When police tried to pull him over, Engel took off at a high speed. Police did not pursue Engel but a short time later they found his vehicle down a long driveway off Blackwater Road and determined he fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.
Additional officers were called in, RCMP said, because Engel has been violent towards police in the past, including the use of weapons. A perimeter was established and the dog was brought in.
The dog tracked Engel to a spot about 800 metres from where his vehicle was found and he was arrested without incident.
Engel remained in custody as of Wednesday morning and has been charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous driving under the Criminal Code.
Engel had been serving an 18-month conditional sentence, served at home rather than in jail but with conditions, issued in February 2014, for unlawful confinement and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm from a September 2013 incident in Mackenzie.
