Starting from where her body was found slightly more than nine years ago, a walk in memory of Aielah Saric Auger will be held today.
At 7 a.m., friends and family will gather on Highway 16 East, two kilometres past the Tabor Ski Hill and make their way on foot to the Prince George courthouse, a 23-kilometre journey.
Considered one of the Highway of Tears missing and murdered women, Auger, 14, was last seen by her family on Feb. 2, 2006, and her body was found eight days later.
RCMP have been treating her death as a homicide.
Then a Grade 8 student at D.P. Todd secondary school, she had been living in Prince George for more than a year after moving from Alberta and was remembered as a well-liked teen who was always very helpful.
Auger was laid to rest in her traditional family home at the Driftpile Cree Nation north of Edmonton.
The walk will also be the revival of a tradition.
In 2007, Auger's mother, Audrey, walked 650 km from Prince George to her daughter's resting place.
She then did other walks in subsequent years on other routes before she was killed in a motor vehicle collision on Highway 16 near Edmonton in 2013.
Auger's aunt, Angeline Chalifoux, is organizing the walk.
