If Dick Voneugen lives to be 100, and there's no reason to think he won't, the long-distance guys better be prepared.
They're going to have to run 100 kilometres to truly honour his birthday.
The second annual Queensway Auto/Dick Voneugen Birthday Run starts bright and early Sunday morning at 6:45 at Otway Nordic Centre, the start and finish of the 81km race. That's one kilometre for each of Voneugen's 81 years.
The focus of the fun run is on participation and no times will be kept. Runners are encouraged to run or walk as far as they want. Run distances are 81km, 50km, 42.2km, 25km, 19km and 7.5km.
The 50km run starts at 11 a.m. at the Hart Highway weigh scales, the 42.2km run starts at 11:20 a.m., at the north end of the L.C. Gunn trail (just off Highway 16 by the Yellowhead Bridge). The 25km event gets underway at 1:25 p.m., at the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Blue Spruce trailhead near Highway 16 west at Art Knapp's, while the 7.5 km run starts at 3:05 p.m., at the intersection of Takla Road and the Cranbrook Hill Greenway.
Arrangements can be made for team relay entrants.
