Volunteers needed for committee work

Official municipal committees help City Hall do the work of running the city. These volunteer groups do a lot of the groundwork and carry out a lot of the grassroots programming that affect our city's quality of life.

"Prince George is a city full of volunteers willing to give of their time to ensure their community is a better place to live, work, and play," said a statement by the City Manager's office. "Both Council and Mayor's committees provide residents of our community the opportunity to participate in the development of our municipality."

Each year in mid-winter, all council committees restock their membership. It is time now for applications to join these key roundtables. They are frontline public bodies that inform the decisions made by municipal staff and elected leaders.

At this time applications are called for to join the following council committees:

* Advisory Design Panel

* Athletic Commission

* Board of Variance

* International Linkages Committee

* Prince George Accessibility Advisory Committee

* Prince George Heritage Commission

* Winter City Committee

The deadline for applications is: 5 p.m. on Feb. 4. Applications received by the City Manager's office prior to the deadline will be considered by city council at its regular meeting scheduled for Feb. 21.

Council committee applications are available online, or may be picked up at City Hall. For further information or to have an application form mailed to you, please call 250-561-7684.

"The committees meet monthly, do research and provide information and recommendations to council and city staff," said the statement.

It should be noted that one group, the Social Grants Advisory Committee, is not accepting applications at this time. Another, the Library Board, has a separate application process but it accessed by clicking the "Library Board" link on the City of Prince George's website.

There are also a pair of mayor's committees - the Mayor's Committee for Seniors Issues and the Finance and Audit Committee - but members of these bodies are appointed by the mayor of the day.
