Via Rail trains between Prince George, Prince Rupert and Jasper will remain cancelled until at least March 2, according to a press release sent by the passenger rail company on Monday.
Via Rail has resumed service in much of Eastern Canada, with routes from Toronto and Montreal in operation already or scheduled to restart on Friday. However, Via Rail service in Western Canada – including The Canadian line which connects Vancouver to Toronto – remains cancelled until at least March 2.
Nationwide, Via Rail said it has cancelled 789 trains, impacting 138,000 passengers, since railway blockades began earlier this month. The blockades, including one in New Hazelton and one near Belleville, Ont., have been in solidarity with a group of Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs who oppose the Coastal GasLink pipeline project crossing their traditional territory south of Houston, B.C.
A spokesperson for Via Rail did not respond to The Citizen's request for more information.
