The city's unemployment rate stood at 5.6 per cent in January, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.
That's up from 4.2 per cent in December as the number of people holding down jobs dropped by 300 to 49,300. As well, the number of people looking for work rose by 700 to 2,900 while the number of people of working age unemployed and not seeking a job fell by 300 to 18,400.
The unemployment rate in January 2012 was 4.5 per cent with 48,600 working and 2,300 seeking employment. Those of working age not participating in the workforce stood at 19,900 during that month.
The city's workforce has also grown over the year. It now stands at 52,200 of working age, up from 50,900 in January 2012.
The figures are based on a three-month rolling average.
