Unemployment rate steady at 6.4 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at 6.4 per cent in January, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

That's up from 4.2 per cent seen in January 2015 as the number of people working declined to 46,500 from 50,200.

The total of people unemployed but seeking work was 3,200 last month, up by 1,000 from the year before. Those of working age not participating was 22,200, up from 18,900.

Month over month, the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points from December 2015, and the number of people holding down jobs declined by 700 and the total not participating rose by 600.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not say how many people are working part time.
