The UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer squad now knows just how powerful the Trinity Western University Spartans are after suffering a 5-2 loss yesterday.

TWU was in town for a matchup against the UNBC Timberwolves at Masich Place Stadium on Friday evening (Oct. 4).

The Spartans came into the game without a single loss on the season while UNBC was looking for their fourth win of the 2019-20 season, which would be a new program record.

UNBC would end up falling behind in under just 10 minutes of the game, with TWU Spartan Kathryn Harvey capitalizing on a Rachel Hutchinson cross into the open mesh for her fifth goal of the season.

Close to the end of the first half, the Timberwolves would strike back with Sofia Jones adding her third of the season from Jenna Wild to knot the game at one.

But the Spartans would score minutes before the break, with Jenaya Robertson converting on a glorious free-kick at the top of the box to put TWU up 2-1 heading into halftime.

“We have been practicing those a lot, so it was nice to see those go in the back of the net,” said Robertson in a postgame press release. “We have had those chances a lot, but to see those get placed where they need to be put is awesome.”

In the second half, the Spartans continued to outpace the Timberwolves with Kathryn Harvey adding her second of the night and sixth of the year to extend their lead to 3-1.

Just minutes later, TWU's Kristen Sakaki netted her first of the year. Sakaki hadn't scored a goal in the past two years.

“It has been a drought for me,” said Sakaki postgame. “The last two years I haven’t scored, so I was really happy to finally get that goal.”

The Timberwolves would get one back when Canada West-All Star Paige Payne sped past defenders and needed a cracker into the top corner from 28 yards out to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Rachel Hutchinson would add the dagger in the 89th minute to extend the Spartans lead to 5-2 and sealed the win.

“They have some amazing players. Their goals were top class,” UNBC’s Payne added in the release. “Kudos to them, those are hard ones for any goalie to save. We went through practice this week and gave it our all. Despite the score, we kept pushing and played great soccer.”

The Spartans moved to 8-0-1 on the year while UNBC now sits at 3-3-3.

The Timberwolves will host the UFV Cascades tomorrow (Oct. 6) in their last home game of the season with kickoff at noon.
