The University of Northern British Columbia is on the lookout for its next chancellor.

John MacDonald will retire after six years and his second term in 2016.

Considered the formal head of the institution, UNBC's sixth chancellor will be announced in fall 2015 and take the helm in May 2016.

The university's alumni association put out the call Thursday for "nominations of people who have an established relationship with the university, who understand the institution's regional mission, and who are comfortable with and adept at ceremony."

The association works with the UNBC Senate to select and recommend a candidate to the University's Board of Governors.

Hon. Iona Campagnolo, a former B.C. lieutenant-governor, was named UNBC's founding chancellor in 1992.
