UNBC is putting its stamp on another new shingle

The university is set to introduce a doctoral degree in health sciences after approval from the board of governors over the weekend.

The university is set to introduce a doctoral degree in health sciences after approval from the board of governors over the weekend. The Citizen previously reported the board also okayed the initial step toward establishing a school of engineering at UNBC.

The PhD in Health Sciences is the third doctorate offered by university, joining Natural Resources and Environmental Studies and Psychology. The program will accept up to six students per year.

"It will continue to establish UNBC as a destination for students interested in health particularly related to people living in rural, northern, and Aboriginal communities," said UNBC President George Iwama.

The university board also cleared a bachelor's degree in Applied Science in Engineering. However, the school must secure funding from the provincial government to establish the program. The degree will enable UNBC to begin establishing civil and mechanical engineering programs at the university.

It is not known how much an engineering program would cost but a UNBC official told the Citizen the infrastructure expenses would be considerable.

The suite of new engineering offering would join the existing Environmental Engineering program.

"The University is keen to continue working with industry, our educational partners, and Government to implement engineering in and for the North," said Iwama.
