Two women were pronounced dead at the scene after their vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head on with an east-bound five-ton truck on Highway 16 West near Mapes Road east of Vanderhoof Thursday night at about 9:13.
The occupants of the truck were taken to St. John hospital in Vanderhoof but were not seriously injured.
As a result of the accident the highway was closed to all traffic for several hours while the collision reconstructionist examined the scene to gather evidence to determine the cause of the crash.
The police continue their investigation but believe speed was a factor in the crash.
The RCMP and the B.C. Coroner's Service are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call RCMP at 250-561-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or go to www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.
