Two-week spring break pending for 2015

School district trustees made a contribution to the city's bid to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games on Tuesday when they tentatively agreed to allow a two-week spring break to coincide with that event.

The move remains pending the city winning the right to host the Games and completion of a consultation process but if approved the break would last from Feb. 12 to March 8. "A successful bid will require schools and services to be available over a two-week period," staff said in a rationale.

The move won unanimous approval although Lois Boone voted in favour reluctantly because the calendar committee was bypassed.

Prince George is in a competition with Kelowna and Kamloops to host the Games.

If Prince George wins the bid, it will be the largest multi-sport event games ever held in the city, with 3,700 athletes, 4,000-6,000 volunteers, 80-100 paid staff, 1,300 officials, media, medical professionals, and thousands of visitors.

Bid proposals must be submitted on May 28.
