Mackenzie RCMP and local Fire Crews were called to a house fire on Kerry Crescent this morning at approximately 7:33 a.m.

Members arrived on scene to find the house fully engulfed.

There were five family members inside the home when the fire broke out. Parents and RCMP members, fire department officials as well as a civilian tried to gain access to the house to rescue two children who were in a second floor bedroom, but the fire was too aggressive. Despite efforts by all on scene, two children died.

"This is a tragic loss not only for the family but also the entire community", says Sgt. Syd Lecky Mackenzie detachment commander. "Victim Services and a Critical Incident Team are assisting the family, first responders and the community with this devastating situation".

Police are asking the community to stay away from the area as fire crews continue to extinguish the fire.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
