A sense of humour is very important said the owner of a new store recently opened in downtown Prince George.

Florie McDonell said when you open a store called Turbo Broom Earth Ingredients, you hope people understand it's supposed to indicate a light-hearted approach to a mysterious subject - the metaphysical.

McDonnell and her sisters Anna Godfrey, and Marisa Drabinasty recently combined their efforts to open a rather eclectic store with brooms, cauldrons, a fountain, pendulum pendants and a wall of herbs all contained in one space. There's also a room for a Tarot Card reader, a place to sit and chat which will eventually be transformed into a little coffee shop and more items than can be counted that exemplify the magical mystical world of the metaphysical.

McDonnell said each sister has a different religious background but all were drawn to the metaphysical world.

"There's a lot of people who practice and I want people to know that there's a place to get what they need and they are not alone," said McDonnell, who is a Catholic from the Philippines. "My parents have strong beliefs and that's how I was raised. There is only one God. I am doing a lot of research and learning from others and I like to understand other beliefs."

In the shop there is also a variety of oils available that are used for divination rituals and spells. There are also hats, shirts and other clothing items available for sale that are from Thailand, and are unique to Prince George.

"We have for sale one of the most mystical magical herbs you can find called the Rose of Jericho," said McDonell. In African traditions the plant is used as a protection and prosperity talisman.

McDonell said there was not much planning that went into the store. She just woke up one morning and decided to open her own store.

"It was around Halloween and there was a lot of people dressed up when I saw a broom and thought a good name for the shop would be Turbo Broom Earth Ingredients.

"Earth ingredients has always been my thing and Turbo Broom has just a hint of humour and attitude," McDonell said.

Turbo Broom Earth Ingredients is located at 350 Brunswick Street and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon. to Sat. and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
