A man suspected of stealing a truck with a shotgun inside was sentenced Thursday to six months in jail.

William Gerald McBride, 38, was issued the term in Prince George provincial court for one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000.

He was arrested September 15 shortly after the truck went missing from the parking lot of a local hotel.

Not only was the shotgun left in the truck but so was a spare set of keys, prompting RCMP to ask drivers to be more careful about what they leave in their vehicles. The truck and the keys were later recovered but not the shotgun.

Following the arrest, RCMP also executed a search warrant on a 2100-block Victoria Street home where they recovered several other stolen items but not the firearm.

McBride was also sentenced to concurrent terms of three months in jail for two counts each of possession of stolen property under $5,000 and possession of a stolen credit card and one count of knowingly possessing a firearm without a licence or registration and to one month for willfully resisting or obstrucing peace officer.

He must also serve 18 months probation on the counts and was assessed $1,400 in victim surcharges.
