Video game enthusiasts and pop culture experts from across Northern BC will gather for the first-ever Video Games Prince George (VGPG) Gaming Expo.
The event will be held Friday, Aug. 22 to Sunday, Aug. 24 at the House of Ancestors.
The three-day convention will feature everything from free-play gaming to a roster of video game vendors, trivia and even a video game music cover band.
Organizers have announced four featured panels:
- Locals will hear from Northern BC fighting game experts — including an Evo: The Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament contender from Prince Rupert — on competing, travelling and how to break into the competitive fighting game scene.
- Members of local bands such as The Burden and Mad Bomb have formed a video game cover band called the Pixel Pals. They’ll talk about video game music and perform later during the event.
- Chris Tompkins, a local video game collecting expert, will host a panel on finding deals and collecting games in Northern BC.
- VGPG co-organizer Kelsy Polnik will host a panel on the difficulty of original NES games — a topic he’s well-versed in, having recently written a book about his quest to beat every NES game on original hardware.
“Prince George has such a passionate community of gamers, and this convention is a chance to bring that energy together,” said Polnik. “It’s going to be a weekend for fans of all ages to celebrate, play and connect.”
Dozens of fighting game enthusiasts will also have the chance to compete in Mythic 2.0 — the largest esports event ever held in Prince George. Participants will compete in games such as Street Fighter 6, Smash Bros. Ultimate, Rivals of Aether and Guilty Gear Strive.
The winner will take home a share of a $5,000 prize pool.
