Foothills landfill users will start paying soon to leave their garbage at the site.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors is expected to approve a bylaw Thursday that will set Sept. 1 as the start date for the $6 small load tipping fee at the local dump.
The charge was originally slated to come into effect at the beginning of July, but was delayed due to staff having to focus energies into finding new caretakers for the local transfer stations.
Loads smaller than 100 kilograms will be subject to the new fee, with the exception of those coming from Area A residents, who will be supplied with a swipe card.
The new rate is part of a financial plan for the regional district to start closing the gap on the eventual closure and post-closure care of the Foothills landfill. Staff identified a $21 million shortfall over the next 10 years that needs to be addressed.
In addition to the small load fee, other tipping fees were also increased and will continue to do so over the next seven years until they reach a maximum of $90 per tonne. Tipping fees will be doubled for dump patrons who come to the site with an uncovered load.
