Tories to select candidate tonight

The Conservative Party of Canada will decide its next candidate for the Cariboo-Prince George riding tonight.

The Conservative Party of Canada will decide its next candidate for the Cariboo-Prince George riding tonight.

Nick Fedorkiw, Todd Doherty and Shari Green are seeking the nomination to replace longtime MP Dick Harris as the party's candidate in the next federal election.

On Oct. 25 Harris, 70, announced he would not seek an eighth term in office and threw his support behind Doherty. Harris was first elected in 1993 as a Reform Party candidate and held the post through the party's merger with the Progressive Conservatives to become the Conservative Party.

Voting in the nomination race began Friday in Quesnel and Williams Lake, and party members in Prince George and Vanderhoof will cast their ballots today.

According to sources, an estimated 3,000 to 3,150 party members are eligible to vote in the riding.

Votes will be tallied and the winner will be declared at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club tonight sometime after the polls close at 8:30 p.m.

The nomination process has had some controversy. Local businessman T.J. Grewal applied to be a candidate, but was denied by the party because he had not held his membership for six months - Grewal was one week short of the cutoff.

Grewal said his campaign team had signed up 1,500 members. After Grewal's appeal of the decision was denied, he eventually announced his support for Doherty.

The next federal election is slated for Oct. 19, 2015.
