Prince George Mounties have provided an update in the incident involving a three-year-old that was hit by a car Wednesday morning (Dec. 19).

Initial indications were the child was hit by a vehicle backing up in a parking lot but that has now been found to be not true.

Investigators now believe an adult female driver was travelling southbound on Ospika Boulevard, bypassed the meridian and travelled against traffic flow for a short distance before entering the parking lot of a retail strip mall.

The driver ran over the child with one tire driving completely over the mid-section of the three-year-old. The child was also near a parent who was paying attention to a younger child.

Police say that child was taken to the hospital and is "miraculously" expected to fully recover.

Cpl. Craig Douglass says the driver remained at the scene and alcohol was not a factor. The investigation is ongoing and charges against the driver are expected.

Police are reminding drivers to slow down and be cautious in parking lots.

"Pedestrians and vehicles share parking lots,” Sgt. Matt LaBelle says in a press release. “This incident should never have occurred, and we could have had a far more tragic ending.”
