Three Prince George Spruce Kings honourably mentioned by BCHL

Layton Ahac, Logan Neaton, Nolan Welsh recognized for efforts in Coastal Finals sweep

While a Prince George Spruce Kings did not take home the Player of the Week nod, three players were rewarded for their recent play.

Defenceman Layton Ahac, Goaltender Logan Neaton, and Forward Nolan Welsh earned honourable mentions by the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) for their roles in aiding Prince George to a second consecutive playoff series sweep last Tuesday (April 2) in Victoria.

The Spruce Kings eliminated the Grizzlies convincingly in four straight games, propelling them to the Fred Page Cup Finals in back-to-back years.

During the two tilts in the provincial capital, Ahac potted two goals and recorded two helpers, and was named the second star of Game Three.

The 18-year-old has 12 points in 13 playoff games this season, the highest-scoring blue-liner on the Spruce Kings thus far.

Neaton has been stellar between the pipes for the Spruce Kings, starting in all 12 playoff wins and made 61 saves on 65 total shots in Games Three and Four of the Coastal Conference Championship series.

The first-year BCHL player also maintained a 1.78 goals-against-average (GAA) in the post-season and a .930 save-percentage (SV%).

The Brighton, Michigan import currently leads all league netminders with a playoff-combined 1.47 GAA and two shutouts.

Welsh has been a silent superstar in the 2018-19 playoffs for Prince George, but his true colours showed in the Victoria games.

Just like Ahac in Games Three and Four of the Coastal Finals, the 19-year-old from Whistler also recorded two goals and two assists, which included the game-winner and first-star selection on April 1.

Prince George opens the BCHL Championship series with the Vernon Vipers on home ice this Friday (April 12) and Saturday (April 13).

Over 3,000 tickets have been sold according to Spruce Kings Business Operations Manager Kyle Anderson; the max capacity for two games at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) is 4,224 (2,112 per night).

Tickets went on sale yesterday morning (April 8), when more than 1,200 tickets were sold to people that waited in line for several hours.

Fans got to the rink as early as 7:30 a.m. in an attempt to get the best seats in the house.
