Vanway Elementary School will be getting a brand new outdoor open learning space.

The project was proposed by the school but will be funded by a $20,000 donation in the memory of former Vanway teacher Pam Schelest.

“I have to say she worked at Vanway Elementary for many, many years,” said trustee Bruce Wiebe at the Oct. 30 board of education meeting.

“This is a donation I believe by Mrs. Schelest’s brother and certainly to me, it’s an excellent addition and a good memory of Pam, who was an excellent teacher who I had the privilege of working with.”

The $20,000 donation will fund the construction and installation of the space, which will consist of a wooden semi-circle facing a chair.

“What a neat concept — I think it’s a thrilling thing to add,” noted Wiebe.

The recommendation to install the open learning space in memory of Schelest was unanimously approved by the board.
