The B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive is set to take place Saturday.

Prince George City Mayor Lyn Hall declared the day as the official B.C. Thanksgiving Food Bank Day along with representatives of the PG Interfaith Council and other religious groups including the Salvation Army, the Church of Latter-day Saints and the Prince George Muslim Association.

The goal this year is to collect at least 20,000 pounds of food.

Volunteers will be busy collecting donations this Saturday.

Brown paper bags will be dropped off at households throughout the city this week and residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items.

"We have been very successful with this program in Prince George and have increased the amount of food donated each year," said Emily Albertson, public relations chairperson.

The food drive began as a local effort in Burnaby in 2009 by members of the LDS Church.

Entering its eighth year, the effort has expanded to include a variety of partner organizations and food banks serving 50 cities in British Columbia.

In 2016, over 475,000 pounds of food was collected by more than 5,000 volunteers province wide.

"All food collected in Prince George stays in Prince George and is donated to our local food bank," Albertson said.

Prince George residents are asked to set their donation bags on their porch for pick up on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
