Tenants going home following apartment fire

Most of the tenants forced out of a Prince George apartment building by a fire last weekend are now back in the building, manager John Currie said Friday.

Of the roughly 30 who were evacuated Saturday night, Currie said 21 living in units on the second and third floor of the City Gate Apartments building at 1617 Queensway St. have returned.

He also expects most of the remaining tenants living on the ground floor will be able to move back in this weekend.

However, he said the unit where the fire broke out in a couch could be closed for weeks before it's brought back up to a livable condition.

Just four tenants registered with the city's evacuation support program, which provides 72 hours of accommodation, food and transportation. Two of those tenants are now getting similar help from the Red Cross.

Currie commended the workers who were busy this week cleaning up after much of the building suffered smoke damage.

"It's the best job I've seen," he said.
