Two opportunities for public input are offered at Monday night's city council meeting.
The first issue subject to a public hearing, beginning at 7 p.m., is a variance application by Telus Communications to erect a a 591 square metre banner sign on the east side of their seven-storey building on Sixth Avenue.
The city's sign bylaw restricts banners signs to 10 square metres and only allows them to be hung for 30 days consecutive days per calendar year.
The proposed sign would replace the existing 83.6 square metre banner sign on the south side of the building.
According to a planning department report, the sign would read "Thank you Prince George for helping us give where we live" and feature a flower on a white background. "The combination of the text and graphics only make up 33 per cent of the entire sign area," said the staff report. "The simplicity of the design should soften the large scale and improve the aesthetics of what is currently a seven-story blank concrete wall."
The department is also recommending council's approval since the sign is directly associated with the building's principal use and has no electronic or animated elements.
Extending the amount of time the sign can be displayed is considered a reasonable request to make the investment into the sign viable. That investment is also based on the assumption the sign will be displayed during the 2015 Canada Winter Games, said the report.
A public hearing will also be held for comments regarding a liquor licence application by the Hart Crown Banquet Hall.
A food primary licence would remove the requirement for clients to get a temporary special occasion licence.
The facility's use wouldn't change, nor would it's capacity of 300 people. The hall is applying for an extension to their hours for liquor service, from midnight to 1 a.m.
