B.C. RCMP arrested a 13-year-old boy about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (OCt. 6) after a report of a student brandishing a handgun at Ruth King Elementary in Langford.

Police were called by someone who saw the youth pull the handgun out of his waistband.

He then heard him tell other youths with him that it was not loaded, and not to worry.

Officers flooded the area and located the youth. Since police are required to treat all weapon reports as if they involve real weapons, the youth was arrested for possessing a weapon dangerous to the public.

The handgun turned out to be a replica and was seized.

The boy does not attend the school.

“The youth’s parents were called and met with police,” said Const. Nancy Saggar. “Although this was a replica gun and no one was threatened or harmed in this incident, police educated the youth on the dangers of possessing and displaying a replica, especially near a school.

“In this case, the youth was arrested to ensure everyone’s safety while police conducted their investigation.”

She said the youth will not be charged and has apologized.
