City updating wildfire mitigation plans

Efforts at Shane Lake focus on creating defensible space

The City of Prince George is inviting the community to provide input on updates to the city’s wildfire mitigation plans.

The Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) seeks feedback on identifying mitigation priorities, areas of concern and upcoming fuel mitigation work at Shane Lake.

Fuel mitigation efforts at Shane Lake focus on creating defensible space, improving access and manoeuvrability for wildfire suppression crews, and reducing the risk of high-intensity crown fires.

Planning for the treatment area was completed in May and June 2025, and a draft fuel management prescription is being finalized. It is expected to be submitted to BC Wildfire Service by the end of the month.

The city plans to begin fuel treatment operations in late fall or winter, depending on site conditions and weather. Local residents can expect closures while work is underway.

The CWRP aims to reduce wildfire risks and protect neighbourhoods, natural areas, and critical infrastructure. It will replace the 2018 Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

The city said the updated plan will “guide local action to better prepare for, respond to, and recover from wildfires.”

It also noted that most high- and moderate-priority projects and recommendations from the 2018 plan have already been started or completed.

The updated CWRP is expected to reflect local conditions contributing to wildfires, incorporate provincial best practices, and address the priorities of residents, Indigenous communities, and regional partners.

It will also align with other city strategies, including the Official Community Plan, the Climate Change Mitigation Plan, and Emergency Response Planning.

Residents are invited to provide feedback at the following three events:

  • Shane Lake Picnic Area: Join city staff and forestry professionals to discuss the upcoming fuel management prescription and CWRP. The event takes place Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m.
  • Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Pavilion: Meet with city staff and forestry professionals to discuss wildfire preparedness, ask questions, and provide feedback. The event will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 4 to 7 p.m.
  • BCNE: City staff and forestry professionals will be available to discuss wildfire preparedness and receive feedback on the plan. The event is set for Thursday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents are also encouraged to visit the city’s website to submit questions, prioritize future actions, and use the interactive map to identify local areas of concern: getinvolved.princegeorge.ca/CWRP.
