Another part of the University of Northern British Columbia will have union representation.

UNBC teaching assistants voted overwhelmingly on Wedsnday (April 3) to join CUPE 2278.

“We are so pleased to welcome these TAs into our local,” CUPE 2278 First Vice President Gillian Glass says in a release. “After years of neglected concerns, they will be represented by a union that understands their work and their issues.”

The post-education institution currently has 76 teaching assistants as well as English language instructors.

The union will now represent the first collective agreement on behalf of the teaching assistants at the university.

CUPE adds that some of the teaching assistants are also students, saying that wages are important to their quality of life. Other issues mentioned including hiring fairness and due process, protection from academic harm and achieving a fair first collective agreement.

“Solidarity among TAs will help make gains for our newest members,” CUPE 2278 President Laura Bulk adds. “We look forward to meeting and working with our members from UNBC.”
