Arson is the suspected cause of a fire that extensively damaged a home in the Evergreen Mobile Home Park on North Nechako Road early Friday morning.

"Initial scene examination has led investigators to believe the fire to be suspicious," Prince George RCMP said.

The detachment's forensic identification service attended the scene to gather evidence.

A total of 15 firefighters from three halls were called to the site at 2 a.m.

They quickly extinguished the blaze, found in the back bedroom, Prince George Fire Rescue assistant chief Darrell Kloschinsky said, and remained on the scene for a couple more hours checking for further hot spots.

But the home suffered an estimated $45,000 damage. No one was home at the time and there were no injuries.

It's the second time in recent weeks a fire deemed suspicious has broken out. The first was at the Lauraville Apartments in the 1800 block of Spruce Street on the night of Feb. 21.

A man was found unconscious inside the unit and rushed to hospital for treatment while the building's 30 or so remaining occupants were able to get out.

Stefan Alexander Sharun has since been charged with arson in relation to inhabited property and is out on a $5,000 recognizance with surety.
