Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George and area.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Prince George, warning that conditions on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 3 are favourable for powerful thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.

Residents are urged to take precautions as the storm could also bring lightning, which kills and injures Canadians each year. Strong wind gusts may lead to property damage, falling trees or even overturned vehicles, while intense rain could cause flash flooding and reduce visibility on roads.

The alert was issued late Sunday afternoon, with a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms forecast for the evening. Fog patches are expected to develop overnight, with temperatures dropping to a low of 10 C. Winds will shift from south to north at 20 km/h.

The forecast for Monday calls for sunny skies and a high of 23 C, with more unsettled weather expected throughout the week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and updates at weather.gc.ca, and to report severe weather via email at [email protected] or on social media using the hashtag #BCStorm.
